The application in industry nowadays such as oil and gas with the increasing use of centrifugal pum ps for applications of this type, it becomes important to be able t o predict pum p characteristics and cr eate efficient design. Design changes will be suggested in an attempt to improve the performance of the impeller use d in the pump. This pro ject consists of the detailed study of a model of the centrifug al pum p and also consists of the detailed to identify, observe and determ ine t he pattern of velocity pr ofile and pressure distribution by using CFD simulation program. This project will definitely p rovide much helpf ul information while contributing to the knowledge abo ut the design and characteristics o f centrifugal pum ps. ![]() Mechanical energy will be given to the pump and it l ater converted i nto hydraulic energy of fluid. Pumps produce negative pressure at the pre ssure at the inlet so that the atmospheric pressure pushes the fluid towards the pump1, 2. The fl uid coming i nto the pump is pushed t owards the outlet mechanically where positive pressure is generated. Pum ps are classified in number of t he ways based on their purpose, specifications, design, environment etc.3. The fluid enters t he pump impeller along or near to t he rotating axis and i s accelerated by the i mpeller, flowing radially outward or axially into a diffuser or volute chamber, from where it exits i nto the do wnstream piping system. Centrifugal pum ps are typically used for large discha rge through sm aller heads 1, 4. With the aid of the CFD approach, the complex i nternal flows in water pum p impellers, w hich are not fully understood, can be well predic ted, to speed up the pum p design procedure5, 6. The use of CFD tools i n t urbo machinery industry is quite comm on today. Recent advances in computing power, together with powerful graphics and interactive 3D manipulation of models have made the proces s of creating a CFD model and analysing results much less labour intensiv e, reducing time and, cos t. As a result of these factors, Computational Fluid Dynam ics is now an established industrial design t ool, helping to reduce design t ime scales and im prove processes throug hout the engineering wor ld 7. ![]() The detail ed procedure of impeller desig n can be found in different literature; in this paper for the design of centrifugal pump, the design parameters and spe cification has be g iven in table 1. The STEP files were t hen imported into fluid flow simulat ion, the mesh generator 5, 8. ![]() The inlet and outlet ducts were intentionally set to simulate the actual measuring situation and to provide better boundary conditions for sim ulations 1, 9. The flow was assumed fully developed when l eaving the inlet and outl et ducts.
